2013 Favorites & Style Recap

Happy New Years Eve!!! I hope your holidays have been blessed and full of joy and happiness! 2013 is almost over and I would like to take this time to look back at some of my favorite natural hair products I used this past year. Some of the products are staples or holy grail items but those lists will come later. To be considered a favorite product, the item had to be something I would repurchase, live up to its claims, and be able to be used more than 2x. Hope my list introduces you to some new products or gives you an idea of some products worth checking out.

Soultaniclas Product Review

As seen in my pre Black Friday haul, I ordered three items from Soultaniclas on the first week of their anniversary sale. Some of you may know where I'm going with this review but I will try to keep things as short and to the point as possible. No long rant but rather an explanation of my displeasure and try to end things on a positive note. Now, on with the review!

Pre Black Friday Haul

The product junkie in me couldn't wait until Black Friday to start making my purchases. Two of the brands are known for slow shipping so I figured it would be better to order early and be sure to have my items before the end of the year versus ordering during the busiest shopping day and not knowing when I'd see my products. I also included the items that were featured in the November Sister's Keeper box. This box was packed with new items from the brand and I can't wait to try them all. No product reviews at this time but rather just a peak at what I picked up and an idea of what product reviews you can expect from me next!

Soultanicals

- Knappylicious Kink Drink, Knot Sauce Curl Detangler, Marula-Muru Moisture Guru

Hairitage Hydration

- Sticky Honey Hash Conditioner, Sprout, Green Tea Time

Sarenzo Gourmet Couture

- Lychee & Mango Moisturizing Juice, Lychee & Mango Styling Jelly, Cookies & Cream Leave-In Conditioning Milk Shake, Snickerdoodle Chocolate Butter, Butter Cream Styling Frosting

Sister's Keeper

- Aloe Kiss Hair Mist, Oats and Cream Soap, Mango Moisture Milk, Salted Caramel Lip Butter, Totally Twisted Styling Custard

Next up, My review on Soultanicles and *warning* it's not a happy review but you know it happens. Did any of you do any pre Black Friday shopping? I'm still waiting on some Black Friday purchases to come in so soon as I have everything I'll post my Black Friday haul.

Wash Day Routine

Hello Hello Hello! I hope everyone is doing well and is in good spirits! It's holiday season and I know you all are very busy as am I. I'm packing and getting ready to re-locate to Atlanta  as some of you know. If you're not, follow me on Instagram @BesosFeron for up to date updates. As the title says this post will be detailing my current washday routine. It may change but as of now this is what I do.

Hot Oil Treatment

Random oils are in this old bottle.
- I begin by dividing my hair into 4 sections. This makes it easier for me to apply the oil and to focus on my ends. I don't heat the oil up directly but rather fill a cup up with water and microwave it for about two minutes. I sit my bottle of oil in the cup for a few moments then begin applying it to my hair from ends to roots and massaging it in once I reach my scalp.
- I don't think the type of oil matters too much and my mixture is never the same. I use what I have.

Heat Cap
Old school heat cap from the 80's lol
- For a deeper penetration of the oils, I wrap my head with a plastic bag or plastic shower cap and sit under my heat cap for 30 min to an hour on medium heat. I've done this step for the past two months and will see if I get the same results with just wrapping a towel around my head. I want to keep heat down to a minimum or I may alternate wash days so I'm not using he heat cap every week going forward.

Shampoo/Condition
- For this step I rinse my hair of the oils some then apply my shampoo to my scalp. I am not a co-washer because I have dermatitis and if my scalp doesn't get clean on a regular it will start itching and feeling tight and scaly. I focus on my scalp massaging it in well then give it a good rinse. I follow up with my rinse out conditioner and let that sit in my hair while I shower before rinsing with cool water.

Deep Condition/Steamer
- I squeeze out as much water as I can and I then apply my deep conditioner to my hair. If I need protein, this would also be the time I do it. Depending on the product, I may or may not have to section my hair off to apply it. If it is really creamy and loose, I don't but if it is closer to a butter consistency, then I will put my hair in fours and apply it that way as to not over use the product. Once the product is applied I sit under my steamer for about 20 min and rinse my hair with cool water.

Moisturize, seal, and set
- I keep my hair wrapped in my Turbie Twist to absorb as much water as I can. I prefer to set my hair on damp and not soaking wet hair. I clip my hair in sections and apply my leave in. Next I begin to finger detangle. Once the section is detangled, I apply an oil (castor oil at the moment) to seal with and then I use a cream with a cone in it. If you read my last post I mentioned I was going to introduce cones back into my regimen to help bind to my ends and prevent breakage. I only use this product once on wash day to keep product build up to a minimal. I am currently using Cantu Argan Oil repairing leave in conditioner. I finish with a butter and plait my hair. My hair stays in theses plaits for the majority of the week and on the weekends I wear my hair loose and the cycle continues.
One way I plait my hair for the week

It may seem like a lot written out but it really isn't. I've noticed an improvement in my moisture retention and condition of my hair since I started doing the hot oil treatments and have noticed some improvement on breakage since adding cones back into my regimen.

Do you have weekly routine? What do you do to combat breakage and dryness?

Product Stash, Breakage & Challenge Updates

If you follow me on IG (besosferon) then you have seen this picture of my product stash! It looks like a lot but  I think it's an optical illusion! Since the products are all laid out it seems like there is more than is really there?! Yes! No? lol well this will be a brief blog of updates on my hair and the hair challenge I mentioned in the 2 Years Natural blog posted on 10/17.

Skin care regimen featuring Bobeam and Cream & Coco

Happy November! The countdown to Black Friday is on and as a product junkie I can not wait for all of the sales! Operation use up my stash is going great! Crazy thing about it is I am basically making room for new purchases which will increase my stash and erase all the good I've done…. shrugs oh well :) The two products I am reviewing are two of the main items I use in my skin care regimen. I have been using them for months now so I feel confident in giving a detailed review. Hope this helps or gives you some ideas of natural alternatives to use on your skin.

2 Years Natural Lessons & Moving Forward

Tuesday 10/15/13 was my 2 year natural anniversary! That's right Zoe is now 2 years old!!! If you've been with me for awhile, you know I haven't had my hair straightened in a year and I wanted to get it pressed out and see how my ends were looking. As I suspected, they were looking kind of rough! This leads me to some lessons I've learned over this past year and how I will do better and move forward! I hope my lazy natural days are behind me and this can help someone on their journey.

Sister's Keeper Dip Hair & Body Moisturizer Review

Operation use up my stash is going great and I am finding myself 'shopping' my collection and using items I purchased months ago! This time around, I decided to style my hair using the Sister's Keeper Dip moisturizer. When I first used it, I had a small sample of it and was only able to twist my bangs with what I had and was in shock at how nice my hair looked so I ordered a full size and I am finally reviewing it. If you're interested in checking out Sister's Keeper products, you can do so by visiting www.sisterskeeper.biz

Claims
- This product claims to be enhanced with essential herbs that help moisturize and penetrate the hair and skin. It is suitable for all hair types and can be used as a leave in conditioner. I have to be honest, I saw the ingredients and was like okay great it's all natural and includes Ayurvedic ingredients but I didn't look more into them. I can say this moisturizer is very rich and thick and was easily absorbed into my hair.

Cream & Coco body products review

This review is so over do it reminds me of the expression being slow as Christmas! Cream & Coco celebrated their 4th birthday in April and had a crazy sale all month long. Being the product junkie that I am, I racked up each week when new items were introduced. I got a request to review more body and skin care natural products so I am here to deliver. The intro picture has 5 products shown but I decided to review the moisturizer next week with my skin care regimen. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed my skin is back in optimal condition and I owe it in part to the new products I've been using. Now, onto the reviews and I hope they are helpful if you're in the market for new body products or have never heard of Cream & Coco!

Uncle Funky's Daughter Defunk Hair Refresher review

September is here! Fall is right around the corner and that means it's protective styling season. As you all know, I am currently rocking kinky twists as my protective style. I don't want to say I'm challenging myself to keep my hair protected but for now I'm going to see how long I can go. One issue with protective styles, such as braids or twists, is how to care for your scalp. If you are pretty active or sweat heavy in your scalp, you will want to wash your hair often but this can lessen the length of time your "longterm" protective style will last. If possible, I would clean/wash the hair once every 3-4 weeks to help the style stay neat and intact but what to do during time between washes? In the August HoneyBee Inspired box, Uncle Funky's Daughter hair refresher was the featured item. The following will be my review of it and what I'm doing to keep my scalp clean and flake free until my wash.

How you know it's time to "protective style"

I can't tell you all how many times I have read or seen a youtube video where they tell you to listen to your hair!?! But what does that really mean? Or they will say get to know and learn your hair!!? Me personally, I have a love hate relationship with Zoe (my hair). I've achieved some great styles and I've had some epic fails! The longer she gets, the longer and harder it is to take care of. Lately, my relationship has been mostly hate and I knew it was time to do something before I did anything drastic. We all need a break sometimes :)

-Don't take this list seriously, it is my satire of how I knew it was time to get a protective style!

My henna experience

The powdered leaves of the henna plant are used as a dye to color hair and for body art tattoos. To get the best color pay off, you should use body art quality henna as the dye content is greater. The more you use it, the greater the results. Henna will produce a red-orange caste on the hair meaning the lighter your hair is to begin with, the more vibrant the color. Some benefits of using henna are: it is an all natural way to color your hair (can get rid of grays with multiple application or brighten the hair), makes the hair stronger with less breakage and split ends, produces smoother shinier hair, and it can make the hair more manageable. *Note- henna can loosen the curl pattern which is what causes tighter, kinkier curl patterns to seem more manageable and easier to comb! According to Curly Nikki, this typically affects naturals with a loose S-curl wave but other curl patterns may notice a difference too with continued use. I didn't think much of this warning due to the nature of my hair and I did experience some curl loosening but no change to my pattern*

That is just a brief synopsis about henna! There is a wealth of knowledge online so do your research before trying anything. So straight to the point: what I did, how it loosened my curl pattern and affected my color, and what I'll do next!

Blow out Product Review!

The last time I attempted to blow my hair out was for my 18 month natural length check. Now, at 21 months natural, I decided I wanted to do mini twists on my hair so I opted to do a blow out to try and prevent the twists from shrinking up. Many of us use the tension method to get the hair as straight as possible but it is really time consuming. Also, it can be rather difficult to maneuver the blowdryer and a denman brush and keep the hair stretched all at the same time. The struggle of it all led me to search for a different blow dryer that was shaped like a big brush so I could eliminate the awkwardness of the tension method and reduce the time for styling. The following are my reviews of the Conair 3 in 1 styler blowdryer and the Nubian Heritage heat protectant leave-in conditioning cream.

Getting a High-Def Twist out!!!

July has been a great month! Mainly because it's my birth month and I achieved a bomb twist out after many failed attempts. If you follow me on instagram, you saw my struggles! Last summer, I kept my hair braided up under a wig so I did not have to deal with this humidity; this was new territory for me and I was feeling the pressure to have a perfect hair day for my birthday (July 10). The following will be an overview of the product combination I used to achieve my HD twist out as well as the technique I used. Hopefully someone will find this helpful and learn from my mistakes :)

Ynobe Moringa Green Tea Conditioning Hair Mask Review

My hair has been through a lot the past two weeks! I have never experimented so much with my hair in such a short amount of time. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I was having issues with re-creating super defined braid outs and twist outs. This led to me trying different product combinations on my hair like every other day. Long story short, I had a lot of product build up on my hair by Sunday which is my wash day. Since I had so much built up in my hair, I decided to wash first and then do my deep condition treatment after on damp hair. I had so much build up from using products that weren't so natural and were cone heavy, that I had to wash my hair 4x!!! I used three different shampoos and did an ACV rinse. Once the cleansing process was done, I wrapped my hair in a t-shirt to get rid of the extra water before applying the conditioning hair mask.

Operation Use up your stash!!!

It's no secret, I am a product junkie! But, I have put myself in rehab and I am taking the necessary steps to prevent from going down the current path I've been on which is becoming a product hoarder! Luckily it's warming up outside and I don't order products during the warmer months which has forced me to be on a no buy as of May 1!!! The only exceptions to this no buy is replacing staple products or if I have a sample of a product and end up loving it, I must have the full size! This brings me to using up my stash. I am beginning with the products that I purchased last Black Friday which some have not been touched! Most all natural products have a limited shelf life and in the following picture I am showing what to look for so you know how long you have to use a product. If the product does not say, a general rule of mine or an average to go by, a shelf life of 6-12 months is a safe time frame to go by.

Top on the ground products!

On the ground products: products that are easily available and can be purchased at various retail outlets; no need to shop online. After my 1 year naturalversary, I found myself wanting to try a larger range of products that weren't available to me. On Black Friday 2012, I began ordering products from online small businesses and have become a major product junkie in the process wanting every new product or being unable to resist a sale. I believe I over did it and now I am somewhat turned off from ordering online from various issues I've experienced from not receiving my order, extra long waits to get my order, or my order being wrong. So, I decided to compile of list of my top on the ground products that have been neglected while I was on my product snob high horse lol.

Two main benefits to purchasing on the ground products: they are easily available when you need them; easy to go to the store and not have to wait and pay shipping; the shelf life is typically longer due to preservatives added so no need to remember when you purchased it or needing to use it up within 6-12months.

WNHS Product Haul Review Part 1

Wow.. it's been awhile but in my defense I have been testing out many products and wanted to have used them a couple of times before reviewing them! Follow me on instagram (BesosFeron) for up to the minute updates. If you are, then you know I was doing another juice fast but stopped after day 15 due to the same breakouts I experienced the first time around. Well enough about where I've been in my absence, in my last post I posted a picture of my World Natural Hair Show haul and asked which products were you all most interested in hearing about first. Well I did my best to use use as many as I could over the past month and the following is my honest review. All products were purchased by me :)

Haulage much?!?

While putting together this post, I realized I am not only a product junkie but I am a hoarder!! Not only am I a hoarder, I'm addicted to sales and anything that flashes *new*. But there is hope! I received two packages and one of my soaps was a tad melted and stuck to the mesh bags it was in and in another package, the butter cream was melted and I spilled it! Summer is coming and if you've been with me for awhile you know I don't order during the summer months! This is exactly what I need; a nice break to actually get to using all of these products and reviewing them! Some of the items I have used or begun to test and reviews are coming soon! But for the other 98% of the items, they haven't been touched! So to help me out, post which products you are most interested in knowing more about in the comments and that will help me compile a list and I will make sure those items are near the top of my current on going list of items to review :) One more thing, all items were purchased by *me* with my own money unless it says I received it as part of a swap! Enough with the small talk here are my hauls in ABC order!

I know what you're thinking... another subscription? How many are you subscribed to? Well, I am subscribed to four but this one is bi-monthly so I'll say 3 1/2! Also, you will receive a coupon code for $10 off your next purchase. My Brown Box February 2013 Review

February's My Brown Box had the theme of indulge-guilty pleasures (me time). The products included were ways to help pamper yourself and just feel pretty with high quality ingredients and items to help you 'indulge' as the theme suggests. I was again very pleased with this box and I love the fact that I was able to use every item except one! The presentation was the same as last month and it is so nicely packaged and displayed as if you were to get a gift set from a department store! That's how I feel opening the boxes and the pink and yellow color combination is so fun and lively, it makes me smile! February 2013 curlBox feat. Pantene product review

Wow, it has been a while and I am so happy to be back with another product review. This review is all about the Pantene truly Natural hair line which was featured in the February curlBox. This was their 1 year anniversary box with the theme being the super affordable regimen. Pantene products can be found at Wal-mart stores and other drug stores. Some good, some bad but let's get right into the review!

Small Business Samples Review!!!

As the title implies, this will be a collective review on some samples of products that I feel you all need to know about if you don't already do! These products can't be found in stores but they are of high quality, all natural ingredients/products that are worth paying the shipping for. These samples were either in my swap sack (www.swap-sack.com) or from the natural review sample box (www.natreview.com) and one Ynobe Shop product. Each brand was new to me and was thrilled to have an enjoyable experience with them. They are all small emerging businesses poised to make a big impact on the natural hair & body product industry. My only critique you may see mentioned below a couple of time is, if you are providing a sample or your product for a subscription service, please include a list of the ingredients. You all know I'm allergic to almost everything under the sun lol so that is a big gripe for me. I don't mind looking up the ingredients, but I shouldn't have too. You are trying to sell me your product. Treat your samples as if they are the actual product you are trying to sell.

Premiere My Brown Box January Box

I love subscription services! For the month of January, I received 5 separate subscription boxes and feel the excitement of them is starting to dwindle. With that being said, My Brown Box rekindled that excitement I once had when I first subscribed to my first monthly subscription, my glam now known as Ipsy. My Brown Box is a monthly lifestyle, luxury, and beauty subscription service for brown beauties everywhere for $20. Now I do love Ipsy and am still a subscriber but, finally there is a subscription service that offers products specifically for me or rather a woman of color regardless of your ethnicity. I was so excited when I first heard this service and I made sure that I was online to be a subscriber and receive their premiere box for January 2013! For more information or to sign up for their mailing list, visit www.mybrownbox.com Subscriptions are re-opening this Saturday, February 9, at 3p.m. est if you would like to subscribe and be a Brown Beauty!!

Ynobe Shop & Hair Perfection Product Review

I feel I have learned what my hair likes and does not like and am more selective on what new products I give a try. For me, it seems my hair prefers the more natural products or products that are loaded with great ingredients and less of the synthetic ones. When my fellow curl friend mentioned she was going to be selling the products that she makes and uses on herself, I was curious as she has gorgeous, healthy looking hair! When she told me about the ingredients I was sold and had to try them. This new line of products called Ynobe Shop by Ebony are now available on her Etsy shop. She has so far released a pre-poo,  the Silky Shea Cream, and the Hibiscus and Marshmallow Root Leave-in Conditioner. I did not order the pre-poo treatment because detangling prior to washing is an extra, and unnecessary step for me. Now, onto the reviews!

Struggling Pescatarian & Updates

Going pescatarian has not been as easy as I thought it would be! I ate a mostly vegetarian diet last week with the exception of a small serving of fish with my dinner last week. Prior to following a pescatarian diet, I did a three day detox of drinking only green juice. My results were great and I dropped 4 pounds! After this cleansing, I knew it was the perfect time to give pescatarian a try but there have been some problems along the way.

Wash Day epic fail product review!

Only for you, my readers, do I put Zoe (my hair) through such trauma! She fought back with me this past wash day! I was testing out an entire regime of new products and she really didn't like anything! My hair felt awful and the results I got the next morning were dismal. I'm not one to bash a product because everyone will have a different experience but if your hair is similar to mine or needs plenty of slip and moisture, this review could be useful for you. I'll keep it short and to the point and if you have any further questions, feel free to leave them below!

December Subscriptions

December was extra special for me because it was the first time I received 3 subscriptions in one month! There was much buzz about the 'holiday' editions of both the curlKit and curlBox and my inner product junkie got the better of me! I also received my ipsy glam bag with the perfect items for a holiday look. As stated in my new years update post, I will present what was included in the subscriptions and if I have used the products or have no plans too, they will be noted. Full reviews will be posted separately when I use a product. Now, lets begin with the holiday edition of the curlKit.

What was in my hair product review!

If you follow me on instagram, you have seen my side puff I wore on Christmas day and then my high puff I wore a week later! I used some new products to achieve these looks and I would like to give you my review on them. If you have used these products before please share your experience below in the comments!

Qhemet Biologics Amla & Olive Heavy Cream
-It softens & moisturizes extra dry, coarse hair. I have to agree, this product does just that and has staying power. Wash day for me are on Sundays so I moisturized my hair with the product and did the banding method with rubber bands to stretch my hair out. I kept my hair in the bands all day Monday and took them down that night. I then chunky two strand twisted my hair so it would have some definition to it for my side puff I wore that Tuesday. The consistency is very thick but smooth and creamy like a thick lotion. It can be applied to wet hair and is not too stiff. It has a nice light lemon scent to it and is not over powering. I can't say this product has any hold to it but it stands up to its claims of moisturizing extra dry, coarse hair.

Weight loss Journey Update and Tips

We are 3 days into the New Year and I'm sure there are many of you out there looking to improve your health and make this year better than the last. If you've been with me, you know I did a juice fast for 12 days in November and lost 15 pounds! I have stopped juicing due to fear of having another bad break out and laziness! I have however maintained the weight loss and have continued to slim down.

Happy New Year plus product reviews!

First products up for review!
What a blessing it is to see another year!!! Thank you all for supporting this blog for the past few months it has truly been an honor and I hope I can continue to share meaningful posts that you all can find useful or inspiring!
This year, I am going to do any future "hair" product subscription updates differently. I will continue to post a picture of what is included in the month's box, kit, bag etc. but I won't do a review until I have used a significant amount of the items. That way, there will be no need to be redirected to the original post! I will continue to update you all on my fitness journey and will post more on that as well as any health related items I see that may be of some use to someone. Make sure you're following me on instagram (BesosFeron), I post daily updates on hair, health, life, and everything in between. Finally, I will begin to do more "body" related reviews. If you've been with me for a while, you know I am search for less toxic, harmful products to use so I will give my review on items that I'm trying out. Some items I've come across I wish I had read a review for but hey trial and error is fun.
