Balding? Hair Loss? Stubborn hair that won't grow?

Over the past 2 months, I have been applying my hair research to trying to "reverse" balding or hair loss for my father. He is 65 years young and has had a bald spot in the back of his head for as long as I can remember. I noticed it was becoming worse so I wanted to see if I could grow back his hair! The picture on the left was taken about 2 months ago, maybe more and the one on the right was taken this Saturday, November 3. The key to his progress was one part products, and two parts consistency. Here's what we did to achieve these great results and I'm sure they will work for you as well!

First, I changed the shampoo and conditioner he was using. He normally washes his hair weekly but I noticed his hair was always dry! He was using a sulfate shampoo and it was severely damaging his hair. I introduced him to Organix Coconut Milk shampoo and conditioner and instantly noticed a change. After this ran out, he began using the Moraccan Argan Oil shampoo and conditioner which is pictured below.
*You do not have to use the same shampoo and conditioner here, just make sure it is sulfate free, extra moisturinzing, or as natural as possible. Be sure to wash once a week which may include co-washing if you are not a shampoo user.

Second, I introduced him to using a leave-in conditioner. The leave-in that was used was the Kimmaytube mixture. The recipe can be found all over the Internet. This leave-in wasn't used through out the entire 2 months, but some leave-in should be used to keep the hair moisturized. He didn't use it daily but rather as needed.

**UPDATE** one of the ingredients in this leave in that really added in regrowing his hair was the pure Aloe Vera juice! Please visit the following link to read the amazing benefits of Aloe Vera, which is known to regrow hair!

Aloe vera can be used as a safe and natural treatment to prevent hair loss. It is great for both men and women to promote new hair growth in places that have experienced hair loss or significant thinning. Aloe vera stimulates the production of new hair and may even lessen the effects of Alopecia.

Third, the second most important step was the oil! From my participation in the Summer 2012 Castor Oil Challenge hosted by kinkycurlycoilyme.com I was amazed at my results from the challenge and figured if it could speed up my growth, then maybe it can help with balding! The Castor oil that was applied to his scalp was the pure, cold pressed Palma Christi Castor Oil, purchased at Earth Fare. Any Castor oil may be used as long as it's all natural and cold pressed or even Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) if you like. I applied the oil to his scalp about 3x a week but the key is to make sure you do a nice scalp massage to stimulate the hair follicles for about 5 minutes a day or when you apply the oil.

That is all I did to his head and was very happy with the results. Now, some myths that I've heard that may affect hair growth did not hold. I've heard the more active you are, the more your hair will grow. Well, my father has a bad back and walks with a cane so he was unable to do any exercises. I will say he drinks a lot of water so that may have played a part in his results, takes daily vitamins, and eats 'ok' lol nothing too healthy or too unhealthy.

Will this work for someone who just has a stubbon area that won't grow? Yes it will!

Pictured below on the left is my hair when it was still chemically relaxed. In the 6th grade, I had a bad perm experience. My stylist was trainer a lady who did not wash out all of the chemicals and it wasn't discovered until I was under the dryer by my stylist that I still had some relaxer left in the back of my head. She then took me to the sink to wash it out but it was too late! I lost all my hair but in the back right above my nape, my hair never grew back and I am now 26! It wasn't until I started using the Castor oil heavily in the back of my head that my hair finally started growing! For years I thought I would never have hair in the back. It's like a miracle and am so happy I was introduced to Castor Oil!

Finally, will Castor oil speed up your hair growth? Yes! Will it transform your hair making it healthier, stronger, and more manageable? Yes! Here are my results after 3 months of use! Any questions or comments feel free to leave them below! Please note I used the oil on my scalp 5x a week; it was in an ingredient in the Kimmaytube leave-in conditioner and is an ingredient in my whipped Shea butter!

Disclaimer: I do not have a degree in studying "hair" or anything like that I have my MPA! I am simply showing you what I have learned from the one and only Jenell Stewart of kinkycurlycoilyme.com on castor oil and how I applied it. I got lucky with the Aloe Vera juice! Trial and error. I tested this out on my dad, as well as myself, and I'm sure if I was able to get the same results twice, it will work for anybody!

  1. Great post. I'm wondering how much, if any, the massage aspect of this treatment affected hair growth. It would be nice to see some research with the same method using a different oil to see how much the daily massage boosted the growth factor or if it is just the massage factor and the oil used is actually not as important

    1. I have seen someone achieve the same results using almond oil so it may have more to do with the massage than with the oil. That's interesting and would be a good experiment to do!

  2. Great advice! Aside from castor oil, some people I know use coconut oil or coconut milk as they massage their scalp. Have you tried using other methods? I’ve read about some, and I want to know which ones are not very effective. But one thing is for sure: instead of chemical products, use herbal ones as they are good for both the hair and the scalp.

    1. I used coconut oil when I first started my journey and it seemed to make my hair thrive like grow like a weed! I'm actually experimenting with other growth aids and I'm testing them out on myself and then I'll try to see if others get the same results so I hope to have some more updates for you soon! Thanks so much for you comment!!
